When you’re using an app to create a symmetrical image, there are a few things to look out for which may cause problems in the final image.
If clouds in the sky aren’t horizontal, they’ll make unnatural shapes when they meet in the middle. The same thing happens with waves in water, rocks, trees and just about anyother objectsyou can think of.
Here’s an example of problem areas to look out for when using apps like Sparkmode to create your symmetrical images. The angled clouds coming together look unnatural and the rocks being squished together make some weird shapes.
This is an example of finding the right point to mirror the image in the Sparkmode app. If I were to slide the original image to the left or right a little bit, the tree at the top of the island would have two tops and look unnatural. I had to find the sweet spot where it looked like a normal tree.
Another issues that may arise when creating a symmetrical image in an app is problems with shadows. The shadows in the image above are not all falling in the same direction which doesn’t make sense to our eye.
When creating symmetrical images using apps, be mindful of everything around your lines of symmetry and watch out for unnatural or strange shapes being caused by the mirrored objects.
One final point… Try not to get stuck only seeing the world in symmetry or you’ll miss out on other photo opportunities.
After you take a photo with your symmetrical composition, be sure to move around and take a few asymmetrical shots as well. This will add variety to your photos and show your subject or scene from different viewpoints.

Avalanches can be caused by a variety of factors, including terrain, slope steepness, weather, temperature, and snowpack conditions. (Larger image not available) —Credit: Copyright Richard Armstrong, NSIDC

down a hill or mountainside. Although avalanches can occur on any slope given the right conditions, certain times of the year and certain locations are naturally more dangerous than others. Wintertime, particularly from December to April, is when most avalanches tend to happen. However, avalanche fatalities have been recorded for every month of the year.
All that is necessary for an avalanche is a mass of snow and a slope for it to slide down. For example, have you ever noticed the layer of snow on a car windshield after a snowfall ? While the temperature remains low, the snow sticks to the surface and does not slide off. After the temperature increases, however, the snow will sluff , or slide, down the front of the windshield, often in small slabs. This is an avalanche on a miniature scale.
Over the past 12 years, the National Hamburger Festival has grown to become one of the best food festivals in the nation—drawing in thousands of attendees to downtown Akron during its annual two-day, summertime event.
I want to emphasize that the success of the festival would not have been possible without the tremendous support we’ve received from all of the restaurants, sponsors, vendors, the City of Akron and all of our attendees.
Please accept my most sincere gratitude to all of you for supporting the festival throughout the years as together we have created a very special event.
As the city embarks on some critically important infrastructure changes that, no doubt, will significantly improve Akron’s core, the reconstruction project would be a major disruption to the festival.
That being said, I don’t feel that we can execute the National Hamburger Festival at the same level we have the last 12 years. Therefore, I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to suspend the festival for 2018.
While this news is immensely disappointing, it presents an opportunity to re-examine the event’s structure and direction.
In closing, I would be remiss to not mention the unwavering support the festival has received from so many passionate Akronites who have—together—created something truly special. This includes our awesome festival staff, Mayor Dan Horrigan and the City of Akron, Tish Jernigan and the Lock 3 staff; City of Akron Police Department; City of Akron Fire Department; Akron Children’s Hospital; Summit County Historical Society; Akron RubberDucks; Greater Akron Chamber; Downtown Akron Partnership as well as many other individuals in the community.
Additionally, we have enjoyed a wealth of fruitful partnerships with the Akron media including the Akron Beacon Journal and Rubber City Radio.
I look forward to reinventing the festival for 2019, so it can evolve into an event that aligns with Akron’s exciting future.
